The first recorded mention of whisky

Lindores Abbey Distillery is located by the ruins of Lindores Abbey in Newburgh, a 12th century abbey and protected ancient monument. The current distillery opened in 2017, however whisky was produced on this site as early as 1494. In fact, the abbey is associated with the first written mention of whisky in history! After a break of 523 years, a new distillery arrived. Housed in a modern glass-fronted building, overlooking the abbey grounds, there is a production area, visitor centre, shop and bar. Distillery tours and tastings are available, and must be booked in advance.

From Royal brewery to traditional distillery

Silverwood

One of the oldest drinks producers in the region, Tullibardine actually started life as a 15th century brewery. Famously providing King James IV of Scotland with a beer before his coronation in 1488. In 1947, it became a distillery and it has been hand-crafting Scotch whisky using traditional methods ever since. You can tour this historic distillery, learning about the whole whisky making process and discovering a few secrets along the way. Concluding with a tasting at the bar, of course.

Scotland's oldest working distillery

Silverwood

Glenturret claims the title of oldest working distillery in Scotland, operating from the same location since at least 1763. Its secluded setting on the banks of the River Turret made it an ideal location for illicit distillation, before production became official. Whisky is still made using traditional methods here. And today you can take a tour, enjoy a tasting, and visit the café and shop at Glenturret.
