How to celebrate the New Year in Scotland

New Year in Scotland is called Hogmanay (pronounced ‘hug-man-ay’). It’s a time to clear out the old and see in the new. Scots have been celebrating Hogmanay since the Middle Ages when celebrating Christmas was frowned upon. Celebrating with singing and dancing, they would exchange gifts and midnight.

Us Scots are nothing if not traditional. Our Hogmanay celebrations involve lots of history and traditions. We definitely recommend that you take a look at some of the traditions we follow in Scotland. And, although we don’t follow some of the ancient ones these days, others are followed enthusiastically!

This includes observing the First Footing, Scottish Fire Festivals and haggis. As well as holding hands and singing Auld Lang Syne at midnight – loudly! Written by Robert Burns in 1788, Auld Lang Syne is one of the most popular songs around the world.
