When is the best time to take a holiday?

Ideally we would all love to be able to go on holiday whenever we like. Sadly, there are a number of things that mean we can’t. For example, there will be obligations to think about such as work and school. In addition, you need to look at the financial side. So, most of us will be looking to find the best time to take holidays. We want to have a look at that here. The season

One of the most important things to look at is the season. However, we don’t specifically mean spring, summer, autumn, and winter. What we mean is peak, off-peak, and shoulder. These seasons actually refer to how busy an area will be. Peak is when things will be busiest. Off-peak is the quieter times when demand is lower. Finally, shoulder is the season in between.

It can be quite tricky to decide which season to go with. Generally it is a case of carefully considering the cost, amenities and attractions, and your own schedule.

Peak season, because it is the busiest, is the most expensive time to visit places. This tends to be the time of year when the weather is at its best. There is also a benefit as it will be the time of the year when everything is open. There can be especially busy peaks around things like school holidays.

Off-peak season is a quieter time when places expect much smaller visitor numbers. Generally these seasons are when the weather isn’t ideal. For example, many locations in Europe are off-peak in winter because it is colder, wetter, and gets dark before 5pm. In the Caribbean, the low season is June to October as it can get too humid for most people. The costs can be lower off-peak, but some attractions may not be open.

Shoulder season can give travellers the best of both worlds. It won’t be as busy so costs can be cheaper. However, the weather can still be good and attractions are either just opening or winding down. The interesting thing is there are usually multiple shoulder seasons. They can happen just before the peak season begins and just after it ends. Many destinations in Europe have them in spring and autumn.

What works for you?

Really, there isn’t a right or wrong answer in terms of when you go. It all depends on what you want from the holiday and the type of accommodation. Holiday lodges can be a really interesting option because they are great at any time of year. If the weather is nice you can venture out to see local attractions. Or, if it is cold and wet, you can stay in and relax spending quality time together. There really isn’t a downside.
